An estimated 1,500 mega yachts visit South Florida annually, an 88% increase over the past 10 years. The direct economic impact of mega yacht repair and maintenance services at local boatyards is estimated to be nearly $220 million.
The City is currently upgrading the electrical capacity at its marinas to accommodate the increased power requirements of mega yachts.
The City has long range plans to reconfigure and increase the number of slips available at its facilities to accommodate larger vessels.
The world's largest in-water boat show is also held annually in
Fort Lauderdale. The year 2009 will mark the 50th annual event. The boat
show has an economic impact of more than $650 million.
