The City of Fort Lauderdale was incorporated as a City in 1917 and obtained its first cemetery shortly thereafter. The City has four cemeteries within the City limits. These premier properties play an important part in preserving the history of our City, as well as serving current and future residents.
Evergreen Cemetery
 Historic Evergreen Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Broward County and is located on SE 10th Ave. in the Rio Vista area of Fort Lauderdale. Mr. and Mrs. Ed T. King, a pioneer family in Fort Lauderdale, established Evergreen Cemetery about 1910 or 1911. The cemetery was platted by Mrs. King from a portion of some 90 acres owned by the King family, who settled in Fort Lauderdale in 1895. The City purchased Evergreen Cemetery for $2,000 on June 19, 1917. The City continued to purchase parcels through 1938, which brought the total cemetery acreage to 11 acres.
Today, Evergreen Cemetery is the resting place of Fort Lauderdale's pioneering families and is one of the most-admired locations because of its heritage. The cemetery is set on Cliff Lake and the grounds are filled with lush trees that provide a serene setting amongst the historic monuments and markers. The cemetery currently has plots available and sites for private family mausoleums.
Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery
 In 1945, the City of Fort Lauderdale purchased 56 acres to create Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery. It opened two years later on State Road 84 in the southwest part of the City. This park offers a multitude of options: full burials, a cremation garden, mausoleums, cremain niches, and private family mausoleums. The property has a veterans' garden with a monument to honor all veterans that served our country. Annually, the cemetery is host to one of the areas largest Memorial Day events honoring veterans.
Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery
 In 1959, the City purchased land on the western boundary of the City and in 1961 opened Sunset Memorial Gardens on the corner of NW 31st Ave. and NW 19th St. This cemetery consists of 30 acres. The cemetery offers full burials, a community mausoleum, and private estates.
Woodlawn Cemetery
 Woodlawn Cemetery (5 acres), located south of Sunrise Blvd. and east of I-95 at the corner of NW 19th Ave. and NW 9th St., is an historical resting place of many pioneering African-American residents. Several people owned the property and records were kept by many people, so care of site suffered. The cemetery began to deteriorate in the 1990's but the City of Fort Lauderdale wanted to retain this part of heritage and obtained the property. The City invested hundreds of thousands of dollars and made renovations and necessary improvements to bring the cemetery up to standards expected by the community. Currently no burials are permitted in this cemetery since no records are available of the burials or plotting of how burials occurred. Markers and monuments are allowed.

A Cemetery Advisory Board of ten trustees appointed by the mayor and city commissioners is responsible for overseeing maintenance and operations, as well as the Perpetual Care Trust Fund. The City has a fulltime liaison to oversee the contractor and agenda for the Cemetery Board of Trustees. The cemetery requires that all property sales, sales on monuments, markers, benches, pay into the Perpetual Care Trust Fund. For more information, contact:
