Centennial Events

The Centennial Celebration kicked off in November 2010 and concluded with the City of Fort Lauderdale New Year’s Eve Downtown Countdown on December 31, 2011. Over this fourteen-month period, tens of thousands of residents attended hundreds of free, public, citywide events. The following is a list of some of the events that took place during the Centennial celebration.
2010 Events
- November 12 - A Centennial tribute at the dual homecoming football challenge between Fort Lauderdale High School and Stranahan High School at Lockhart Stadium 6pm tailgate and 7pm game
- November 23 - Inaugural Centennial Celebration featuring the lighting of the Centennial Light Display at 6:30pm at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard
- December 3 - Centennial Christmas Pageant First Baptist Church featuring a different Fort Lauderdale pioneer during each of the 19 shows.
- December 7 - Winterfest Centennial Shoreline Decorating Extravaganza presented by Universal Property and Casualty Insurance, Co. judges on Showboat Floridian Princess and Pre and Post Cocktail Event at Coral Ridge Yacht
- December 9 - Unveiling of the Official Centennial Poster by Charles Fazzino at the Museum of Art hosted by Nova Southeastern university
- December 10 - Fourth Annual Light Up Sistrunk at 5:30 pm at Sistrunk Blvd. and 9th Avenue
- December 11 - Centennial Salute Winterfest Boat Parade
- December 31 - Centennial Downtown Countdown Party

2011 Events
- January 1 - Broward Health and Holy Cross Hospitals give out the 1st Centennial onesie to the first babies born at each. These hospitals will give a Centennial onesie to every child born in Fort Lauderdale
- January through December - Stranahan House-sponsored BECON-taped programs featuring our historic past and vibrant future will allow distant learning students to be a part of the Centennial Celebration
- January 10 - Centennial Hugh Taylor Birch lecture at the Bonnet House
- January 11 – The Review Club led by Susan Gallion discusses Fort Lauderdale, The Venice of America by Susan Gillis, 10:30 am to noon in the Parlor at First Baptist Church
- January 14 - Centennial Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club - 11:30 am
- January 15 - Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club Bubble Que and 100th Birthday Celebration - Stranahan Park 5pm to 8pm
- January 15 - Centennial Family Picnic and Art Competition for children of all ages at Colee Hammock Park to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the art installation “Lil Blader” coordinated by artist Nilda Comas, 11 am
- January 15 & 16 - Singles Tennis Tournament at the Jimmy Event Tennis Center at 9 am
- January 17 - "Re-Claiming the Dream" King Holiday Parade & Mentors' March, 9 am
- January 30 - Centennial Intracoastal Tour by Dr. George
- February 5 - Too Hot to Hide one-hour walking tour starting at 2 pm at the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club, featuring history of Annie Jumper, Katherine Rawls, Ivy Stranahan and Frankee Lewis
- February 7 - Centennial look at the Bonnet House in the 1930’s
- February 10 – “My Soul is a Witness” - Centennial Celebration of the 10th anniversary of this book, which is a history of Black Fort Lauderdale. Old Dillard Museum at 6pm
- February 19 – Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament at the Jimmy Event Tennis Center
- February 23 - Join the Fort Lauderdale Council of the US Navy League as they learn how to be actively involved in the celebration's events during their dinner dedicated to the Centennial. Mayor Jack Seiler and a member of the Centennial Committee will address the diners during their 6 pm to 9 pm meeting at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club. Call 954-565-6778 for reservations.
- February 25 - Pineapple Jazz Jam Centennial Celebration at the Stranahan House
- February 25 - Dixie Zone/18th Annual Masters Challenge featuring a Centennial tribute at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex
- February 26 - Sistrunk Centennial Parade and Street Festival hosted by Sistrunk Historical Festival cultural organization to celebrate the accomplishments of people of African descent, on the Sistrunk Corridor from 11 am until 6 pm
- February 27 - 11th Annual Riverwalk Run promotes the projects of the Junior League of Fort Lauderdale and celebrates the Centennial with a 5-mile & 5K course running along the south bank of the New River through the Rio Vista neighborhood, ending with a party on Riverwalk’s Huizenga Plaza
- February 28 - City Commissioner Bobby B. DuBose presents A WALK THROUGH HISTORY,
A Night of Art, Music, and Storytelling, from 7 to 9 pm at Elks Lodge #652, 712 NW 2nd Street. For details and to RSVP, call 954-828-4753.
- March 1 to 31 - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers soccer team announced that it is offering a new season ticket special during March to tie into the City's 100th anniversary. Season ticket packages are on sale for $100. The packages include tickets to 14 home games at Lockhart Stadium with priority seating, admittance to a bonus-friendly match, along with a Strikers T-shirt, and access to the Founders Parking Zone and Tailgate Party. - March 3 - Centennial Sue, a friend of Ivy (Stanahan) and Julia (Tuttle), shares memories 11:15 am - 12:15 pm at the almost 100-year-old First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale
- March 4 - School Board of Broward County Centennial History Fair
- March 5 - Too Hot to Hide one-hour walking tour starting at 2 pm at the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club, featuring history of Annie Jumper, Katherine Rawls, Ivy Stranahan and Frankee Lewis
- March 8 to 11 - Subtropical Cities 2011: Subtropical Urbanism Beyond Climate Change Conference, co-hosted by Florida Atlantic University (note this year is the 50-year anniversary of FAU) and the Queensland University of Technology (Our sister city, Gold Coast, is in Queensland, Australia.) Opportunities to showcase Fort Lauderdale in its Centennial year and to highlight the many facets of its "subtropicality" to delegates from around the subtropical world. It is the FIRST United States visit for this conference since its 2006 inception. Sessions will be held downtown at FAU, in the Main Library, and the Museum of Art.
- March 11 - Subtropical Cities Fort Lauderdale Centennial Legacy Project brings international and local experts together to discuss the future of Fort Lauderdale as it celebrates its first 100 years and looks forward to the next 100. This think-tank activity is free for public observation from 9:00am to noon at FAU; Keynote Address by Dr Ken Yeang, internationally renowned as the "father" of the sustainable bioclimatic building and FAU's John De Grove Visiting Eminent Scholar, is free to the public from 4:00pm to 5:00pm at the Main Library; Reception at FAU is hosted by the College for Design and Social Inquiry and is free to the public from 5:00 pm to 7:00pm. A book signing of Dr. Yeang’s latest book will be held at the reception site.
- March 10 - Riverwalk Trust Centennial Tribute to the Seminole Tribe of Florida at Timpano Chophouse and Martini Bar
- March 12 - Centennial Parade and Festival celebrating St. Patrick's Day
- March 14 - Centennial Life in Fort Lauderdale 1911-1920 lecture at the Bonnet House
- March 17 - The 49th Annual and Centennial Fort Lauderdale Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast with speakers George LeMieux and the Honorable John P. "Jack" Seiler at the Broward County Convention Center, Grand Ballroom, Third Floor, 1950 Eisenhower Blvd. from 7:30 am to 9:00 am.
- March 22, 23, 24 - Business Fair demonstrating the economic development links between Fort Lauderdale and Medellin, Columbia, sponsored by Greater Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International

- March 26 - Centennial Beachfest – 8:00 p.m. to midnight on Fort Lauderdale’s picturesque beachfront, from A1A and Las Olas Boulevard north to the Ritz Carlton. The event will feature outdoor musical entertainment, family-friendly activities, prizes and giveaways. The grand finale will include a sensational fireworks show at midnight, when Fort Lauderdale officially turns 100! Centennial Beachfest is sponsored by the Fort Lauderdale Community Redevelopment Agency.

- March 27 - Centennial Riverfest! 100th Anniversary of the incorporation of Fort Lauderdale. Free, family-friendly event with live entertainment on the Riverwalk, from 12 pm to 8 pm

- April 2 - Kids Ecology Corps, Partners in Action, People and Planet Day, a Centennial kick off for Earth Month and to celebrate the City’s green initiatives. Learn about the latest green technologies, services and products that will help to sustain our environment for the next 100 years. - April 3 - The Genealogical Society of Broward County will teach you how to use maps as learning tools for discovering information about the history of our City. Starting at 2:30 pm at the Alvin Sherman Library, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Blvd, Nora Quinlan, Director of Reference will show you how the City reshaped itself in the past 100 years.
- April 3 to June 5 - "Centennial Fort Lauderdale" art exhibition at the New River Inn, featuring art from the Bonnet House artists
- April 4 to 17 -Historic Fort Lauderdale 100th Year Anniversary Exhibit sponsored by the Broward Art Guild at the Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts 1310 Gallery. The show will feature artworks celebrating the 100-year history of Fort Lauderdale. Opening and closing receptions are free and open to the public. - April 7 - Don't miss the 10th Annual Spring Around Fort Lauderdale
at Virginia Schuman Young Elementary, located at 101 NE 11th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. The event will feature games, food, music, fun and the famous basket raffle and silent auction.

- April 29 - Celebrate Arbor Day
and Earth Day with Bonnie Cole of Happyland Pre-School. The free event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Colee Hammock Park, which is located at 1500 Brickell Drive in Fort Lauderdale. Participants include the City of Fort Lauderdale, the Fort Lauderdale Garden Club and the Moringa Garden Circle.
- April 29 - The world-famous Las Olas Wine and Food Street Festival benefiting the American Lung Association, sponsored by Premier Beverage Company. On Las Olas Boulevard, 60 restaurants will provide foods to pair with the more than 45 tables of wines from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Tickets ($100 street festival) are available online.
- April 29 - The Friendship Luncheon, presented by the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society (FLHS), will honor four of the past mayors of Fort Lauderdale, with current Mayor Jack Seiler as the Master Of Ceremonies. This event will take place near the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale on the Intracoastal Waterway at the historic (established in 1947) Coral Ridge Yacht Club from 11:30am to 1:00 pm.
- May 5 to 8 - Fort Lauderdale’s Swimming Centennial Celebration: A Four-Day Splash to Celebrate Aquatics

at the Fort Lauderdale History Center, 4:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at 219 SW 2nd Avenue. - May 7 - International Swimming Hall of Fame will host its 46th Annual Induction Ceremony, featuring this year’s Gold Medallion recipient, Prince Albert of Monaco, and aquatic celebrities from around the world.
- May 12 - Walker Elementary School of the Arts presents "Walker Idol, Where rising stars are born." The performance will take place at 6:00 pm in the Performing Arts Auditorium of Walker Elementary School of the Arts, which is located at 1001 NW 4th Street. - May 14 - Family Day at the Opera at Broward Center, which is located at 201 SW 5th Ave Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312. This Centennial event is FREE and open to the public. Get an up-close, behind-the-scenes look at the glamorous and mysterious world of opera. Children and parents alike will be able to join in the activities, which will include costume, prop, and make-up demonstrations by FGO professionals. Music will be provided by FGO’s Young Artist Studio, featuring music from the upcoming productions of Don Giovanni and Cyrano. Limit 4 tickets per person. Limited tickets available.
- May 14 - Fort Lauderdale Strikers Centennial Match - The Strikers will renew their rivalry with the "Rowdies" when they take on Tampa Bay at 7:30 p.m. at Lockhart Stadium. In honor of the of the City of Fort Lauderdale’s 100th Birthday, the Strikers will wear a special Centennial patch on their uniforms.
- May 21 - Sign up for the Relay for Life and help make cancer history! This event will bring together those who have been touched by cancer to celebrate, remember and help in the fight against this disease. Relay for Life is the nationwide signature event for the American Cancer Society. In 2009, Relays were hold in more than 5,000 communities and raised more than $374,000,000. - May 21 - The City of Fort Lauderdale invites you to attend the opening of Coral Ridge Park, which will begin at 3:00 p.m. The park is located at 2401 NE 27th Terrace in Fort Lauderdale. - May 25 - Centennial artist, Charles Fazzino, has been working on a Centennial Legacy Art Project with 37 students at Fort Lauderdale High School. The project is complete and will be unveiled at Fort Lauderdale High School at 10:00 a.m.
- May 28 - Celebrate Memorial Day weekend at the City of Fort Lauderdale’s 2nd Annual Great American Beach Party, "Decades of Distinction," on Saturday, May 28 beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Fort Lauderdale Beach at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard. Highlights include live music, family games and contests, a sandcastle contest, a classic car show, an art show, a Fort Lauderdale history exhibit, a special appearance by the U.S. Army's Black Daggers parachute team and a screening of Girl Happy.

Burns will lead a discussion on the film with local experts on the topics of democracy and civility, which he explores in this film. He will answer audience questions after the screening. - July 4 - Centennial 4th of July Celebration on Fort Lauderdale Beach with Wade-In Marker Installation
- July 4 - Join the Healthy Little Heads Foundation for a Centennial 4th of July Celebration Dinner Cruise and Fireworks Show along Ft. Lauderdale's Historic Intracoastal Waterways "The Venice of America" from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm aboard the Luxury Charter Yacht "Musette". A portion of the proceeds support children with cranial deformation conditions. Tickets available online.
- July 4 – Celebrate the 4th of July with a fabulous cruise along the Intracoastal ending with a front seat viewing of the fireworks show. The cruise is from 5pm to 10pm, tickets include a 4-hour cruise on the Charter Yacht "Musette I" at 531 S New River Dr East and a buffet dinner, soft drinks (cash bar available), music and dancing, party favors, and of course, the spectacular Fort Lauderdale Fireworks like you've never seen them before! A portion of the proceeds from this event ($100 per person; kids under 5 free with adult) will benefit the charity, The Healthy Little Heads Foundation. - July 7 to 9 - The Florida Neighborhoods Conference will join the Centennial Celebration as the 15th Annual Conference is hosted at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66, 2301 SE 17th Street Causeway. Neighborhood advocates will hear from speakers, take tours, and of course enjoy Fort Lauderdale’s famous hospitality.
- July 8 - The Florida Neighborhoods Conference has invited our Centennial Historian Susan Gillis to speak at their Welcome Breakfast. In the afternoon, the FNC will host a Workshop Session from 1:30 pm - 2:45 pm at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 featuring a panel of neighborhood leaders holding a discussion titled: By embracing the past, we will learn to care more about the present.

Her fresh insights into Fort Lauderdale’s past—based on oral histories, archival material, and original research—are complemented by vintage illustrations from the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society and the Broward County Historical Commission. - July 29 - A Centennial Membership Social for the Opera Society will be held at 6pm at 12390 NW 7th Street in Plantation. An opera performance will take place at the social. The Opera Society has provided charitable, educational and cultural projects for the City of Fort Lauderdale since it was formed in June 1994 by the merger of Greater Miami Opera, founded in 1941, and The Opera Guild Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, founded in 1945. - December 31 - The City of Fort Lauderdale Orange Bowl Downtown Countdown is the premiere New Year's Eve celebration. Attracting over 100,000 revelers, the annual celebration features live music, great food, and lots of family fun with face painters, bounce house, a special DJ just for the kids as well as a kids early countdown with the 8ft centerpiece lighted ball being raised and lit. As the clock strikes midnight, the ball descends and the night sky comes alive with a fireworks spectacular.
