Open Streets and Winterfest Family Fun Day 2014

Updated on 11/06/2015 5:49 PM

The City of Fort Lauderdale hosted the first Open Streets event on November 23, 2014 in partnership with Winterfest Family Fun Day. People of all ages attended to discover, engage, play, and celebrate on E. Las Olas Boulevard. Open Streets events temporarily close streets to vehicles so people have full access to walk, bicycle, dance, play, rollerblade, skateboard, jog, socialize, or enjoy other activities in a safe, car-free environment.

About Open Streets Events

Open Streets events, also referred to as Ciclovía events, are all-inclusive events that turn car centric streets into recreational “playgrounds” where people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can participate in healthy activities that build community and create liveable cities. Whether looking to get in better shape or receive an emotional boost, Open Streets events make people want to go outside without worrying about traffic and pedestrian safety.

Inspiration for Ciclovías gained popularity following the introduction of the concept in Columbia in the 1970s where main streets were closed off for seven hours each Sunday and on public holidays to allow joggers, bicyclists, skaters to exercise on the car-free streets.  Other outdoor activities, such as aerobics and yoga, took place simultaneously in city parks. Today, more than 70 miles of Colombian streets are open to non-motorized activities on Sundays and holidays with participation rates that can exceed 1 million. Not only are Open Streets events becoming more popular internationally, this sustainable, healthy trend has caught on in the United States, with more 200 municipal events occurring nationwide.

The Rise of Open Streets

The video below created by Streetfilms provides a great overview of the story behind the open streets movement.
