Battalion Chief Eric Pologruto has served Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue since January 1992. Eric holds an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from Pikes Peak Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University. He is a State certified Fire Instructor III and is affiliated with a local fire academy. Battalion Chief Pologruto has been a paramedic since 1992 and has served as an instructor for the American Heart Association teaching Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support classes.

The Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Department Training and Special Operations Bureau's mission is to provide the highest quality training to our firefighters so that they have the knowledge, skills and abilities to safely mitigate fire/medical/hazardous emergency incidents while minimizing the risks to themselves, civilians and the environment.

The Training and Special Operations Bureau is located at 2000 NE 16th Street in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The bureau is dedicated to the training of Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue personnel in the following areas:

  • Training and orientation to all new hires
  • Continuous training on the newest strategies and techniques, as well as the fundamentals of firefighting
  • Medical training to keep our personnel abreast of the newest skills, techniques and pharmaceuticals in the field
  • Re-certification training for medical knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Producing instructional videos on various topics, from hazardous materials decontamination to in-service training on new equipment
  • Producing and administering promotional tests
  • Research and development for new equipment and procedures
  • Hosting specialty training, such as HazMat for confined space, safety officer training and technical rescue training
  • Fire and medical training/education for civilians through our Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program

The bureau also provides training that is periodically mandated by the state, such as the delivery of small pox vaccination training, as well as specific medical training including Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).

The bureau is also tasked with archiving all of the department's training records.
