Swim Fort Lauderdale - City of Fort Lauderdale Swim Team Program

The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department is proud to announce the establishment of "Swim Fort Lauderdale," a new competitive and instructional swimming program at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex. Team registrations will be accepted on regularly scheduled team practice days beginning Tuesday, January 17. In addition, USA Swimming and US Masters Swimming Team Club membership applications are currently in progress.

The City of Fort Lauderdale is pleased to introduce Swim Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious coaches who bring more than 70 years of combined coaching experience to the program:

Coach Dave GibsonDave Gibson, Head Coach, is a certified ASCA (American Swimming Coaches Association) Level 5 Coach with 36 years of experience including Head Senior Coach Fort Lauderdale Aquatics; Head Coach/General Manager at the Phoenix Swim Club in Arizona; Head Coach/CEO at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club in Charlotte, North Carolina; Head Coach at Fort Wayne Aquatics in Indiana; and Assistant Coach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dave has coached all levels of swimmers from the novice to the world-ranked, including three Olympians (most recently Rickey Berens).  In addition, Dave has served as a USA National Team Coach for several international meets. He has received the following accolades during his career: ASCA Gold Medal Coaching Award; Coach of the Year in Arizona, Indiana and North Carolina; and he is an Indiana Swimming Hall of Fame Inductee.

Coach Jennifer Gibson Jennifer Gibson, Head Age Group Coach, is a certified ASCA Level 4 Coach with 30 years of experience including Head Developmental Age Group Coach of Fort Lauderdale Aquatics; Head Age Group Coach at the Phoenix Swim Club in Arizona; Assistant Coach at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club in Charlotte, North Carolina; Head Age Group Coach at Fort Wayne Aquatics in Indiana; Age Group Coach at the Southeast Family YMCA in Indiana; and 17 years coaching high school swimming in Indiana. Jennifer is a member of the ASCA Board of Directors and also serves as a USA Swimming National Team Manager for the Junior Team, World University Games, Pan-Pacific Games and Short Course World Championships.  She has received the following accolades during her career: 35+ National Top 16 Age Groupers with two national records; Indiana Coach of the Year; Indiana Age Group Coach of the Year; and Arizona and Indiana Zone All-Star Coach and Camp Coordinator.  Jennifer is married to Coach Dave Gibson.  They have one son, Harrison, who is a sophomore at the University of Florida where he is the team manager of the swim team.

Coach Marty HendrickMarty Hendrick, Head Masters Coach, is a certified ASCA USMS (United States Masters Swimming) Level 2 Coach (highest USMS Coaching certification) and has been coaching at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex since 2005 as the Head Masters Coach of the FLA Masters swim team.  Marty’s experience as a USMS coach includes winning a national team championship at the 2010 USMS Summer Nationals in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  The first swimmer Marty coached in FLA Masters set a Masters World Record in 2005.  From 2005 to 2011, his teams placed in the top 3 at USMS Nationals each year except 2008 when his team placed 4th overall.  In his tenure at FLA Masters, Marty has coached 52 USMS Individual All- Americans, 112 USMS Relay All-Americans with over 200 Individual National Championship swims.  His teams have also achieved success at the International level by winning two IGLA Small Team Titles in 2008 and 2011 as well as a Top 10 performance at the 2009 Pan American Championships in Vera Cruz, Mexico.

Marty was awarded the 2011 USMS Kerry O'Brien Coaching Award.  In 2007,  he was the  recipient of USMS Coaches Grant at the American Swimming Coaches Association World Clinic.  In addition, Marty has served as a US Masters Convention Delegate for 2006 and 2007.  As a USMS Swimmer, Marty has multiple Masters World and National Top 10 rankings since 1988.

Upcoming Session and Practice Information – Starting Tuesday, January 17, 2012

The following regular practice schedule will be effective as of Tuesday January 17, 2012. Ongoing team registrations will be accepted on regularly scheduled team practice days. 

Starfish

Ages: 5 - 8 years
This a pre-competitive team designed to introduce the basics of competitive swimming in a fun learning environment. Children should be able to independently swim one 25-yard length and attend two classes per week to participate in the Starfish group.

Dates: February 6 - March 30
Days: Monday - Thursday
Session 1: 4:15 - 5:00 p.m.
Session 2: 5:15 - 6:00 p.m.

Dates: April 9 - June 8
Days: Monday - Thursday
Session 3: 4:15 - 5:00 p.m.
Session 4: 5:15 - 6:00 p.m.

Fee: $150 per session

Rising Stars

Ages: 6 - 10 years
This program is structured to prepare children for competition participation and will develop skill all four competitive swim strokes. Children should be able to independently swim 25-yards of freestyle and backstroke and participate in two to three practices per week.

Practice Times:
Monday to Thursday: 4:15 - 5:15 p.m.
Monday to Thursday: 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Saturday: 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. (Saturday practice begins February 4.)

Monthly Dues: $85
Annual USA-S Fee: $50
Annual Team Fee: $75

Age Group I

Ages: 9 - 12 years
This program is for intermediate to advanced swimmers. Strength and endurance training are a strong focus utilizing both land and in water training techniques. Participants are able to swim all four competitive strokes with proper technique and participate in three to four practices per week.

Practice Times:
Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri: 4:15 - 5:45 p.m.
Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu: 5:45 - 7:15 p.m.
Saturday: 9:00-10:30 a.m.

Monthly Dues: $100
Annual USA-S Fee: $50
Annual Team Fee: $75

Age Group II

Ages: 11 - 14 years
This program is for intermediate to advanced swimmers. Strength and endurance training are a strong focus utilizing both land and in water training techniques. Participants are able to swim all four competitive strokes with proper technique and participate in four to five practices per week.

Practice Times:
Monday, Wenesday, Friday: 4:15 - 6:15 p.m.
Tuesday, Thursday: 4:15 - 6:30 p.m.
Saturday: 8:30 - 11:00 a.m.

Monthly Dues: $120
Annual USA-S Fee: $50
Annual Team Fee: $75

Senior I & II

Ages: 13 - 18 years
Prerequisites for Senior II: State-qualifying time standards.
This program is for advanced competitive swimmers. Strength and endurance training are a strong focus utilizing both land and in water training techniques.

Practice Times:
Monday - Friday: 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Tue, Thur & Fri: 5:15 - 6:45 a.m.
Saturday: 7:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Monthly Dues:
Senior I (3x/ week): $85
Senior II: $120
Annual USA-S Fee: $50
Annual Team Fee: $75

National Group

Ages: 13 - 18 years
Prerequisites: Two Senior Sectional time standards.
This program is for advanced competitive swimmers. Strength and endurance training are a strong focus utilizing both land and in water training techniques. Participants will participate in approximately nine practices per week.

Practice Times:
Monday - Friday: 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Tue, Thur & Fri: 5:15 - 6:45 a.m.
Saturday: 7:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Monthly Dues: $145
Annual USA-S Fee: $50
Annual Team Fee: $75

Masters Team

Ages: 18+
Recommended Skill Level: Capable of swimming 200 yards comfortably.
This program is a fitness and competitive program for adult swimmers. Practices are designed and catered to all skill levels.

Practice Times:
Monday - Friday: 6:00 - 7:00 a.m.
Monday - Friday: 7:00 - 8:00 a.m.
Monday - Friday: 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Monday - Friday: 6:15 - 7:15 p.m.
Saturday: 7:00 - 8:00 a.m.
Saturday: 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.

Monthly Dues:
3 practices per week: $75
Unlimited practices: $85
Saturdays ONLY:$25
USMS Drop In: $10
Annual USMS Fee: $42
Annual Team Fee: $75
