Property Damage Hotline
We would like to thank the many City of Fort Lauderdale
residents who contacted the Property Damage Hotline
to report damage from Hurricane Katrina. Thanks to
resident participation, City officials were able
to gather extensive information on damages sustained
in the area.
The City of Fort Lauderdale has compiled the information
and it has been forwarded to Broward County officials,
who are now putting together a comprehensive county-wide
report that will be sent to state officials. Broward
County, acting on behalf of the City of Fort Lauderdale,
will continue to work with local, state and federal
officials to seek individual assistance from the
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for residential
property damage incurred as a result of Hurricane
Katrina.
As of Thursday, September 1, 2005, the City's Property
Damage Hotline is no longer in operation. Again,
we would like to thank residents for their cooperation
and assistance in this matter.
Floyd Hull Stadium Closed
The City of Fort Lauderdale's Floyd Hull Stadium,
located at 800 SW 28 Street, is closed until further
notice. Citizens with questions about programs or
activities that were scheduled to take place at Floyd
Hull Stadium should contact the Parks and Recreation
Department at (954) 828-PARK (7275).
Big Toy and Truck Extravaganza CANCELLED
We regret that the Big Toy and Truck Extravaganza
scheduled September 10, 2005 has been cancelled due
to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The area in
Holiday Park set aside for the event will have to
be used for the citywide cleanup effort, making the
park area unusable for the event.
Fort Lauderdale Police Department
The Police Department reminds drivers to
treat
all intersections with inoperable traffic lights
as four-way stops.
Pedestrians and drivers
are reminded to be on alert for downed power lines.
Sanitation
Services
All sanitation services have resumed
and are operating on a
regular schedule. This includes bulk trash, yard
waste,
garbage and recycling services.
The sanitation department is currently working to
collect debris from Hurricane Katrina. The length
of the clean-up effort will depend upon the amount
of debris throughout the City. However, the sanitation
department is aiming to complete debris clean up
within the next two weeks. The City is utilizing
additional crews to assist with clean-up efforts
and ensure that debris is picked up as quickly as
possible.
Over the next two weeks the sanitation
department will visit all residential properties
for debris pick up and removal.
For questions about sanitation services, please
call the City’s 24-hour Customer Service Center
at 954-828-8000.
Clean-up
Tips
Due to
numerous downed power lines, some of which may be
hidden by fallen trees, residents are asked to use
caution and patience when beginning their yard clean-up.
Please be sure to keep yard waste separate from
other debris.
Take great care when conducting clean-up efforts.
Injuries often occur after a storm has passed.
Once you can safely begin your yard clean-up, please
remember these common-sense tips:
- Keep children and pets inside until debris is
cleared.
- Be careful when walking through tree debris.
- Wear proper clothing including closed-toe shoes
and work gloves.
- Do not attempt to move limbs from downed trees
that rest against power lines. Contact FPL to
report downed lines at 1-800-4OUTAGE (468-8243).
- Be careful
to lift properly, bending at the knees and
not at the waist.
- If limbs are too big to move comfortably, wait
until additional assistance is available.
All
yard waste should be piled as close to the property
edge as possible. Do not block roadways with yard
waste. Be safe and work carefully.
