Living Holiday Trees

Norfolk Island PineStarting around this time of year, many stores sell Norfolk Island Pines as living holiday trees. While they are pretty in their small pots, if you plant them outside in South Florida after the holidays, they will grow to be very tall trees that are susceptible to hurricane damage.

It would be much better environmentally to use a small native tree as your living holiday tree. Native trees can be planted outside with no potential problems.

Examples of native trees that can be planted outdoors are Southern Red Cedar and Sand Pine.

You can check with the following local native nurseries for availability of these and other native trees.
