The City of Fort Lauderdale is proud to join with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee for a full day of events on Monday, January 15, 2007 promoting unity in our community.

City Hall will be closed on Monday, January 15, 2007 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There will be no interruption to City of Fort Lauderdale sanitation services on Monday, January 15, 2007.


INTERFAITH PRAYER BREAKFAST - 7:00 AM

Hosted by the Lee Family YMCA, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Interfaith Prayer Breakfast will feature Rev. Dr. John F. White, senior pastor of Mount Hermon AME Church of Fort Lauderdale. The event will also include the presentation of the MLK Youth Leadership Scholarship Award winner and the MLK Spirit Award winner. The breakfast starts at 7:00 a.m. at the Lee Family YMCA, located at 408 NW 14 Terrace in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $30 and sponsorship tables are available. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY PARADE - 8:45 AM
Parade Route: Parade starts at NW 7 Avenue and NW 4 Street; proceeds north to Sistrunk Boulevard (NW 6 Street) then west to Delevoe Park (2520 Sistrunk Boulevard).

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade will begin at 8:45 a.m. at NW 7 Avenue and NW 4 Street in Fort Lauderdale. Former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro, Michael Irvin, and Broward County Supervisor of Elections, Dr. Brenda Snipes, will serve as Grand Marshals. The parade will feature marching bands from Stranahan High School, Walker Elementary and Monarch High School; the William Dandy Middle School Step Team; Caribbean Carnavale performers and more. Community, civic, social and faith-based organizations will also participate. The parade will follow Sistrunk Boulevard west to Delevoe Park (2520 Sistrunk Boulevard).

PARADE TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS - JANUARY 15, 2007 - 8:30 A.M. - NOON
The following traffic restrictions will be in effect on January 15, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. - noon for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade.

  • Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane of NW 7 Avenue will be closed from NW 4 Street to N.W. 6 Street. One northbound lane of NW 7 Avenue will remain open. Southbound traffic will be diverted east onto Sistrunk Blvd. (NW 6 Street) then south on Andrews Ave
  • Sistrunk Blvd (NW 6 Street) will be closed to traffic in both directions from NW 7 Avenue to NW 27 Avenue
  • NW 4 Street from NW 7 Avenue to NW 9 Avenue will be closed for the staging of the parade.
  • NW 8 Avenue from NW 3 Street to NW 5 Street will be closed for the staging of the parade.

The parking lots in the vicinity of New Mount Olive Baptist Church (400 NW 9 Avenue) will also be used for staging of the parade

Please note: Police officers will reopen roads at the east end of the parade route as the parade moves west along Sistrunk Blvd to Delevoe Park.

"STOP THE VIOLENCE" CELEBRATION - 10:30 AM

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day "Stop the Violence" Celebration will take place immediately following the parade at 10:30 a.m. at Delevoe Park, located at 2520 Sistrunk Boulevard (NW 6 Street). The celebration will feature keynote speaker Dr. Mack King Carter, senior pastor of the New Mount Olive Baptist Church. The event will also include motivational speaker, James Amps, and performances from the Cease Fire Campaign and the Lauderhill Steel Drum Ensemble. Numerous local agencies and organizations will be on-hand to distribute information about domestic violence, crime prevention, gun safety and other issues related to promoting unity in our community. Admission is free.

SOUNDS OF FREEDOM CONCERT - 7:00 PM

The New York City-based Urban Ballet Theater is a group of multi-cultural artists who successfully blend ballet with modern and jazz vocabularies. The performers are exceptional dancers as well as ambassadors for this unique art form that incorporates imaginative urban and classical dance movements with innovative storytelling to create a one-of-a-kind experience for the audience. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day performance will feature Urban Ballet Theater's "Mambo" and will incorporate local dancers from Dillard High School for the Performing Arts. Opening with her five-piece ensemble will be Dee Dee Wilde, one of South Florida's most captivating entertainers. This engaging vocalist has performed with Phylis Hyman, Gerald Albright and George Duke. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online at www.browardcenter.org or by phone at 954-462-0222. Proceeds from the Sounds of Freedom Concert will go to fund scholarships for deserving performing arts students.
