With campaigns going strong and election time drawing nigh, poll workers are needed to serve in various capacities. More than 7000 citizens serve as poll workers in Broward County to ensure that fair and accurate elections are conducted. Poll workers are vital in the election process because these individuals must efficiently process voters, provide instructions on the proper use of the voting equipment and effectively solve potential problems that voters may encounter.
While poll workers are paid volunteers, they must meet the following criteria: (1) Be a registered voter in Broward County; (2) Fill out an Election Day Support Workers Application; (3) Attend a Poll Worker Orientation Class; and (4) Attend a minimum of 3 to 8 hours of Poll Worker training.
There are several poll worker positions available which include: Clerk, Assistant Clerk, Voting System Technician, Field Voting System Technician, Special Deputy, and Inspector. Bilingual poll workers (Spanish and Creole) are also needed.
- The Clerk manages overall tasks, activities, and poll workers in the polling place and the Assistant Clerk shares the duties with the Clerk and can substitute for the Clerk if he/she is unable to serve.
- The Voting System Technician provides technical support in the precinct on Election Day.
- The Field Voting Technician conducts site visits on Election Day and provides support to the Voting System Technicians.
- The Special Deputy delivers Election Day materials to polling locations.
- Inspectors setup and breakdown precincts.
