Fort Lauderdale - The City of Fort Lauderdale will announce the 2007 Drop Savers Water Conservation Poster Contest winners at the Fort Lauderdale City Commission meeting on Tuesday, April 17, 2007.  The meeting, which begins at 6 p.m., will take place at Fort Lauderdale City Hall, located at 100 N. Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

The contest winners (listed below), along with their families and teachers, have been invited to attend the commission meeting where the students will be recognized for their achievements.  They will be presented with a T-shirt with their winning design printed on it, a Barnes & Noble gift card, and a plaque.

The first place winning designs from each grade category were submitted into the state competition, sponsored by the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association (FS/AWWA).  Dionisio Blanco was selected as a first place winner by the FS/AWWA in the 4th-5th grade category.  In addition to the prizes above, Blanco will receive a $100 Wal-Mart gift card, a T-shirt with his winning design printed on it, and a gold medallion from the FS/AWWA.   Tiffany De Faria, Mitchell Friedman, and Nadine Hampel received honorable mentions from the FS/AWWA and will receive a Drop Savers T-shirt and a $10 Wal-Mart gift card.

The City of Fort Lauderdale Public Works Department’s Utilities Bureau sponsors this annual contest to promote water conservation and environmental awareness, as well as to celebrate the American Water Works Association’s nationally proclaimed “Drinking Water Week,” recognized May 6-12, 2007.

The contest, which was open to Fort Lauderdale public and private school students grades K-12, encouraged students to create a “T-Shirt” poster using their own creative water conservation ideas and designs.  The entries were judged on originality and the best portrayal of the contest theme, not just artistic ability.
