54th Annual David Deal Playday Offers Numerous Activities for the Entire Family

Fort Lauderdale - The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the Broward County Parks and Recreation Department, will celebrate the 54th Annual David Deal Playday with a series of events from July 21 – July 25, 2007. The Playday events will take place at Joseph C. Carter Park, located at 1450 West Sunrise Boulevard, with the exception of the championship swim meet, which will take place at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex at 501 Seabreeze Boulevard.

All David Deal Playday activities are free and open to the public, with a wide range of activities, from live music to swimming, there is something for everyone to enjoy:

Saturday, July 21
12:00 p.m. (noon) – 9:00 p.m.: Summerfest Comedy and R& B Showcase Presented by the BET Wrap It Up Campaign
This free, family-friendly event will feature national recording artists Avant, T-Pain, and Fort Lauderdale’s native son, Sammy. Local favorites will include Jim Berry and the South Florida Steppers and the hilarious stand-up comedians Joe Clair, Rayzor, Rod Z. The stage will be jumping all day with live Hip Hop, "old-school," gospel, R & B and Jazz music from local artists. There will be many activities for the family to enjoy including the Kid Zone, Bid Whist, dominoes and chess tournaments and recreational swimming in the new water playground. Summerfest is presented in partnership with BET and the New Life Ministry’s Community Health Summit. Vendor space is available at the event for $100.

Also during the Summerfest…Community Health Summit
If it’s been a while since your last check-up, you are in luck. The entire community is invited to attend New Life Ministry’s health expo for free screenings, immunizations and diagnostic exams. Representatives from several medical and non-profit organizations will be on site, including Humana of South Florida, Broward County Health Department, North Broward Hospital District, Hope Central, Children’s Diagnostic Treatment Center and more.

Tuesday, July 24
10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Championship Swim Meet
Tri-county Summer Swim Leagues are invited to compete in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, IM and team relays at the beautiful Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex. Entry deadline is July 17. Call 954-828-8983 to register.

Wednesday, July 25
9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.: Playday Kids Day
Let the games begin! Olympic sports, novelty competitions, table games and wacky water sports are just a few of the activities planned. There will also be a Teen 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. Prizes will be awarded all day for the best competitors. Admission is free.

4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.: Teen Splash of Talent & Step Show
Join us for an afternoon of entertainment provided by Fort Lauderdale’s most talented teens. Local organizations will be putting their best foot forward in our Summer Step-Off. Participation is free for all teens. Call 954-828-4538 for more information.
