Fort Lauderdale - The City of Fort Lauderdale is launching a disaster response program aimed at identifying local residents who have special needs. The Special Needs Assistance Program for Disasters (SNAP) will enhance the City’s ability to effectively locate and respond to residents following a hurricane or other disaster.

Officials are urging residents with special needs to join the county maintained registry now. Registration is available on-line at www.broward.org/atrisk or by calling 954-831-4000 (TTY 954-831-3940).

Fort Lauderdale’s Emergency Manager, Erin Mohres, said advance registration helps emergency personnel plan ahead for disaster response. “It is very important for interested residents to register now; do not wait until a storm is approaching.”

The Fort Lauderdale Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which is comprised of neighborhood volunteers, will help provide assistance to those with special needs.

Mohres said it is critical for all residents, including those with special needs, to maintain a disaster plan and a disaster supply kit. More information is available at www.fortlauderdale.gov/hurricane or by calling Fort Lauderdale Emergency Management at 954-828-6700.
