Fort Lauderdale - The City of Fort Lauderdale Citizens Volunteer Corps will clean up Bass Park on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 8:00 a.m.  Volunteers interested in participating should meet at Bass Park, located at 2750 NW 19th Street.  Free parking for the event will be available on site.

The Citizens Volunteer Corps project will include a variety of activities such as painting, weeding, sweeping, landscaping and other types of outdoor maintenance work.  City residents both young and old are invited to participate in this project.  No special skills are required and all supplies will be provided.  Participants are reminded to wear work clothes and use sunscreen.  Refreshments will be provided.

To volunteer, please contact Maxine Singh in the Fort Lauderdale City Commission Office at (954) 828-5005 or e-mail msingh@fortlauderdale.gov.  Walk-up volunteers will also be welcome to participate on the day of the event.

Officially recognized Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods that participate will be eligible to earn points to fulfill the match requirement needed for a Neighborhood Capital Improvement Program (NCIP) grant.  In addition, students who participate can earn hours that may be used toward fulfilling their school’s community service requirement.

Established by the Fort Lauderdale City Commission, the Citizens Volunteer Corps is comprised of volunteer residents who serve on an “as needed” basis to address non-emergency, citywide projects that positively impact the community.  The City’s vice mayor, Carlton Moore, currently serves as chair of the Citizens Volunteer Corps Steering Committee.  Since its inception, more than 1,000 Fort Lauderdale residents have participated in Citizens Volunteer Corps projects.
