City of Fort Lauderdale: A1A Marathon Traffic Advisory

Fort Lauderdale - The City of Fort Lauderdale advises residents and visitors that the A1A Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, February 17, 2008, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Traffic will be impacted downtown, east on Las Olas Boulevard and on A1A along the beach.

During the race City streets will remain open to vehicular traffic. However, both lanes of A1A northbound will be dedicated to runners. North and southbound vehicular traffic will be redirected to the southbound lanes of A1A for travel through the area.

Temporary road closures will occur on Seabreeze Boulevard at East Las Olas Boulevard from 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m., and on A1A just north of Sunrise Boulevard between 8:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Motorists will experience heavy traffic and congestion along A1A and are advised to seek alternate routes to avoid delays until 12:30 p.m. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department will have over 80 officers stationed along the marathon route to guide pedestrians and motorists and ensure public safety.

Road Closures: The roadways of SW 2nd Street from SW 7th – 4th Avenues and on SW 5th Avenue from south of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Center Parking Garage entrance will be closed to vehicular traffic for event set-up and race start and tear down, from approximately Saturday night, February 16 at 11:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 17. No other roads will be closed prior to or during the marathon.

Marathon Route: The starting line will be located near the intersection of SW 2nd Street at SW 4th Avenue. Runners will continue east to Andrews Avenue, south to East Las Olas Blvd., east to A1A and turn north onto A1A. The course continues north on A1A past Oakland Park Boulevard, briefly to Galt Ocean Drive, back to A1A and north into Pompano Beach.

Runners will turn around just south of the Hillsboro Inlet Bridge in Pompano Beach and will follow A1A southbound to the finish line in the South Beach Parking Lot at 800 Seabreeze Boulevard. On the return only, runners will enter into Birch State Park at Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, where they will complete a two mile loop, exit the park, and continue southbound on A1A. Traffic will be redirected at the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard at A1A where other traffic delays are expected. The roadway will be cleared and traffic back to normal by 12:30 PM.
