Fort Lauderdale - The City of Fort Lauderdale has been awarded a $3.2 million federal grant that will enable the Police Department to hire 12 additional police officers.

The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP), an initiative funded by President Barack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

“We’d like to thank President Obama and the Justice Department for their outstanding response to the public safety needs of Fort Lauderdale and municipalities across the country,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler. “Ensuring the safety and security of our residents and visitors is our number one priority, and is vital to the long-term sustainability of both our City and our nation.”

The COPS Hiring Recovery Program will provide $1 billion in grants to 1,046 law enforcement agencies from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands and Guam. The funds will be used to hire and/or rehire approximately 4,700 law enforcement officers to enhance community policing and crime prevention efforts.

The CHRP grants will provide 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for entry-level officer positions over a three-year period.  There is no local cash match requirement; however, at the conclusion of the 36 months of federal funding, police departments will be required to retain the grant-funded positions for a minimum of 12 months.

“This grant will help the City of Fort Lauderdale put more cops on the streets to carry out our mission to protect and serve the citizens of this great community,” said Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Frank Adderley. “Any time we can strengthen our crime-fighting capabilities, it’s a win-win for the City and our residents.”
