Fort Lauderdale – The City of Fort Lauderdale will host the grand opening of Coontie Hatchee Park on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 9 a.m. The park is located at 1116 S.W. 15th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.
Purchased through the Broward County Safe Parks and Land Preservation Program and provided to the City of Fort Lauderdale, Coontie Hatchee Park is conveniently located in southwest Fort Lauderdale in the Riverside Park neighborhood adjacent to the New River. The 2.68-acre park contains a variety of amenities, including picnic pavilions, a large playground, a fitness trail with stations, waterfront views, bicycle racks, park benches, lighting and parking.
Coontie Hatchee Park was named for its historical, geographical and botanical significance. The name is derived from the Seminole Indian names for the New River and the native coontie (Zamia Floridiana) plant, which flourished on the banks of the river.
