Fort Lauderdale – Vice Mayor Bobby B. DuBose in conjunction with the Fort Lauderdale Branch of the NAACP will host a night of to relive the historic civil rights journey of Eula Johnson at the Elks Lodge - 712 NW 2nd Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL - Monday, June 6, 2011 from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm.
This is the second Walk Through History presented by Vice Mayor DuBose. Understanding and recognizing the significant contributions of African-Americans in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County and in the State of Florida is vitally important. A Walk Through History is not only a celebration of history but a history lesson given by those who actually helped turn the tide of history and can be proclaimed as "walking history."
The history of the Civil Rights Movement is well documented. The Supreme Court decision of 1954, Brown vs. Board of Education, which ended school segregation in the nation, and the rush of civil rights legislation which ensued during the next two decades, transformed the social fabric of the United States. Arguably, that transformation was the most important domestic development since the Civil War, which was itself fought on issues of race and state sovereignty.
As the City of Fort Lauderdale continues to celebrate its 100th Birthday, the contributions of its black pioneers – their dedication, their leadership, and their unwavering spirit - are applauded, honored and remembered.
For the purposes of this second Walk Through History event, we celebrate Eula Johnson who was instrumental in the civil rights movement in Fort Lauderdale and Broward County during its most critical period. During her journey, African-Americans around the nation and here in South Florida, specifically Fort Lauderdale, received national attention for their struggle to end racial inequality. From civil disobedience, nonviolent resistance to marches, protest, boycotts, sit-ins and wade-ins, African-Americans’ profound contributions to the changing face of our cities, states and nation will forever be remembered.
A Walk through History honors not only the contributions of Eula Johnson but also all of those who came before us and fought for equal opportunity under the law. Event-goers will have the opportunity to hear stories from those who participated in the wade-ins, sit-ins, and the
desegregation of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the Broward County School Board and the United States Postal Service.
A Walk Through History is free and open to the public. Invite your family and friends and join Vice Mayor DuBose to view historic photographs, listen to music form the civil rights era, renew old acquaintances, share photos and stories and learn about the July 4th Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Wade-In and the grand opening of the Eula Johnson House.
