Fort Lauderdale - For residents and small businesses that want to invest in solar energy, June is a great time to go green. The City of Fort Lauderdale's Smart Watts Rebate Program offers up to $1,000 per household or small business for the installation of a solar water heater or solar photovoltaic system. The savings can be potentially doubled beginning June 21, when FPL will offer similar rebates.
- Residential Solar Water Heating: Both the City of Fort Lauderdale and FPL offer $1,000 rebates for the installation of solar water heaters for a combined savings of $2,000. A solar water heater can cut a family’s water heating costs by up to 85 percent, according to the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC).
- Residential Solar PV: The City’s residential solar PV program provides an incentive of $1,000 on the total PV system, while FPL offers $2,000 per kW of the rated direct-current (DC) output of a PV system, up to a maximum of $20,000. The City offers low interest loans that can help bridge the cost of these systems.
- Business Solar Systems: The City offers up to $1,000 in rebates for small businesses; FPL’s rebates can reach up to $50,000 per site based on the size of the solar systems installed.
Both the City and FPL are offering the rebates on a first-come, first-serve basis. To learn more visit www.fortlauderdale.gov/rebates and www.fpl.com/landing/solar_rebate/index.
