Each July since 1985, America has celebrated Park and Recreation Month. A program of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and the America’s Backyard initiative, the goal is to raise awareness about the vital impact that parks, recreation, and conservation have on communities across the United States. This year’s theme is “Rock Your Park!” Americans are encouraged to get out and show how parks and recreation make their lives extraordinary.

Parks and recreation build communities through fostering social groups, connectivity, activities and common interests. Parks and recreation agencies also play a major role in the fight against obesity by promoting healthy lifestyle choices for children and adults. The City of Fort Lauderdale’s celebration of Parks and Recreation Month is designed to encourage active, healthy habits in July and throughout the year.
