Fort Lauderdale - The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is proposing revisions to the flood zones throughout Broward County. According to preliminary estimates, approximately 9,000 parcels will be added and 10,000 parcels will be removed from the flood zone in Fort Lauderdale. Local property owners are urged to attend an upcoming public meeting to determine their proposed zone on the revised maps.

The flood maps are used to determine flood insurance purchase requirements, flood insurance rates and establish minimum elevations for new construction and substantial improvements to existing structures. By adopting the new flood maps, Broward County is assured that FEMA will offer assistance during emergencies and provide flood insurance coverage for residents. Implementation of the updated flood maps is anticipated to take place in December 2012, following the upcoming public meetings and an appeal and adoption process.

The following public meetings will have informational tables with federal and local government representatives available to address questions on flood insurance and the appeals process. Stations set up at each of the public meetings will include: Property Look Up, Insurance Information, Appeals and Community Assistance. Representative from the City of Fort Lauderdale will be present at the meeting in Plantation on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and Pompano Beach on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
