| George T. Lohmeyer Treatment
Plant is actually designed as a central regional
facility. It is used to treat all wastewater
generated in a region encompassing the City
of Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Oakland
Park, and Port Everglades, as well as part
of Tamarac
and unincorporated Broward County. The plant
has a capacity to treat 55.7 million gallons
of
water per day.
The central region was formed in March, 1978,
following the recommendation of a facilities
plan on wastewater management systems for Broward
County. The communities agreed to eliminate
eight separate sewage treatment plants and centralize
wastewater treatment at one location. This move
has substantially reduced the operating and
maintenance costs and provides a higher level
of environmental protection for all communities
involved. |

The plant was completed and placed into full
operation on January 31, 1986. The facility
was built using state of the art technology,
with an advanced computer control system used
to help manage the complex treatment process.
The plant is named after former Utilities Director
George T. Lohmeyer in memory of his 10 years
of dedicated service to the City of Fort Lauderdale.
His efforts were instrumental in making this
facility a model plant. The plant was dedicated
in his name on February 22, 1979.
