At Work
History
In 2000, the City’s Workplace Recycling
Program was updated and infused with new life. This coincided
with the hiring, for the first time in the City of
Fort Lauderdale, of a full time Recycling Program
Coordinator.
Starting with City Hall, comprehensive recycling
was implemented in all administrative and operational
facilities under the city government.
Local businesses soon began requesting business
recycling information. Initially, small businesses
in the downtown area were added to the City route
which improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
The City provided recycling education, recycling
containers and service, and the City was recipient
of all material revenue. Businesses benefit economically
because as their waste is diverted through recycling,
disposal costs are reduced.
Today, businesses can participate in workplace recycling
in different ways in Fort Lauderdale.
How to Participate
There are three ways to participate:
1. Participate in the COPR (City Office Materials
Recycling) Program (A Public/Private Partnership
with City of Fort Lauderdale Recycling Office)
Businesses may piggyback on the City contract, which offers very competitive rates. Businesses pay $25/month for two 95-gallon recycling carts, which are serviced weekly. Full carts divert about 1 cubic yard from the waste stream, helping your business reduce disposal costs. The carts may be used for office paper, or for commingled plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum/steel cans, and drink/juice cartons. The City provides technical support, employee education and attractive, colorful recycling collection carts, and receives the material revenue. Under this plan, businesses are assisted in maximizing their waste disposal reductions, and realizing the associated cost savings.
This program allows businesses to target a variety
of office paper, newspapers, magazines, corrugated
cardboard, steel and aluminum containers, plastic
and glass bottles, and cartons and juice boxes.
How Does the Program Work? Currently 105 city government offices, private businesses and non profit organziations are participating in the COPR program.
To find out more about participating , send an e-mail request to the City of Fort Lauderdale Recycling Program Manager, Casey Eckels, at CEckels@fortlauderdale.gov.
2. Work With Other Service Providers
The recycling service provider that serves the City
is not the only provider in town. There are several
companies that provide similar recycling services,
but at variable prices. Any business is free to request
proposals from any contract hauler licensed by the
City of Fort Lauderdale.
Recycling services may be provided by contractor
other than the contractor that provides for trash
hauling.
To get the most competitive
rate, always shop around. Some businesses prefer
to limit the terms of the
contract to short periods, so that they may continue
to take advantage of competitive prices. These
terms are usually negotiable for service contracts. Education and support is minimal in these programs,
and target materials are variable and determined
by the contractor.
3. GOT Paper? Hungry Green Dumpster Recycling Drop-Off Locations
For businesses who desire to recycle, but are willing to transport recycled material themselves, the City has a partnership with local schools to collect all types of mixed paper in a community dumpster. PLEASE, NO FOOD WASTE or paper soiled with food or water, no plastic wrap or styrofoam, or other materials of any kind.
