New Pilot Beach Recycling Program

Beach BinsThe City of Fort Lauderdale is committed to providing opportunities to recycle in public and recreational places.

Seventeen Alpha Underground Containers, each buried five feet in the ground and able to consume about six yards of recyclables or trash, have been installed in Fort Lauderdale.

These unique recycling and trash containers enable the City to store several weeks of collected materials underground, which significantly reduces collection costs. The container design prevents odors, is inaccessible to animals, and even minimizes the attraction of insects.

Six of the Alpha Underground Containers have been installed on the beach in two clusters of three containers - one for recyclable mixed paper, one for commingled plastic or glass bottles, cans and drink cartons, and one for trash.

Ten more Alfas are installed in various City Parks in groups of 2, for recycling commingled bottles and cans, and left-over trash. The last container is located at Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Station 13. Placement of the container at the Fire-Rescue station will result in more than $10,000 in savings.

The locations of all containers are listed below:

  • A1A and Las Olas, Public Parking street side.

  • South Beach, by overpass at picnic area parking lot.

  • Holiday Park, on the west side of train/playground.

  • Oswald Park, by the golf course.

  • Mills Pond Park, inside baseball field and by the football field.

  • Snyder Park, just north of the front office.

  • Fire Station #13, in the left back corner of the parking lot.

Fort Lauderdale Beach is among the finest in the world. We hope that everyone will take a moment to help protect this precious resource by disposing of litter and recycling all appropriate items in the new underground containers.
