Fort Lauderdale Fire Department Requirements

No Smoking - In accordance with the Florida Clean Air Act, W.M.A.'s smoking policy restricts smoking to designated smoking sections outside the building. Smoking is prohibited at all times in the exhibition hall, restrooms and concession stands. While W.M.A. maintains signage, the cooperation of show management in encouraging compliance is requested.

  • Exit doors must be unlocked when building is occupied. (This includes during set-up).
  • All aisles and paths of egress must be kept clear and maintain minimum widths as per plans.
  • All decorative material must be flame retardant. Fire suppression equipment cannot be concealed or obstructed.
  • Detailed floor plans including location of exits, aisles and their widths, display booths with size and location of all fire protection equipment must be submitted for approval.
  • Copy of approved floor plan must be available on site.
  • Overcrowding shall not be permitted.
  • Noncombustible ashtrays shall be at all entrances.
  • All loose seating shall be fastened in groups of not less than three (3) but not more than seven (7).

  • Building permit required
  • Minimum 30' from building
  • Tents will require fire watch
  • Fireworks & Pyrotechnics
  • Fire permit required with fire watch
  • Electric cords from portable equipment (lamps, etc) shall not exceed six (6) ft.
  • Gang plugs shall not be allowed - multi outlet, UL approved circuit bars acceptable.
  • Seating & Aisles - Floor Level
  • Maximum travel distance to exit 150'
  • Aisle width - minimum 6 ft.
  • Standard Seating - l2" minimum clearance between seats
  • Continental Seating
  • 18" clearance for 18 or less seats
  • 20" clearance for 35
  • 21" clearance for 45
  • 22" clearance for 46 or more
  • Deviation from approved floor plans must have F.D. approval prior to show opening.
  • Circumstances not covered during the review process are subject to all applicable regulations as deemed necessary by the Fire Department.
  • Each show must be reviewed on an individual basis. It is impossible to predict the make-up and circumstances of each event. Additionalprecautions are often necessary.
