Electric Bus Rolls into Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale, FL (August 8, 2019) Sun Trolley will be testing an all-electric bus in downtown Fort Lauderdale beginning Friday, August 9, 2019. The bus, which will be clearly marked as an all-electric vehicle, will seat 22 passengers with additional standing room and will provide service on all of Sun Trolley’s routes over the next couple of weeks.

“Putting the electric bus through road testing will indicate how well it can meet the needs of the City’s Sun Trolley Community Bus service and perform in our South Florida climate,” said Renee Cross, City of Fort Lauderdale Transit Planner. “It’s the first step in examining what technologies we might be able to implement long-term to make our bus fleet more environmentally-friendly, while enhancing our sustainability.”

With the introduction of this bus, Fort Lauderdale joins other local agencies, such as Broward County Transit, that recently began testing electric vehicles.

“Our 2018 neighbor survey identified preparing for the future of the City of Fort Lauderdale as an overall priority. We look forward to the results of this trial and the possibility of modernizing the Sun Trolley fleet, which could move us closer toward fulfilling our goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by 2020,” said Chris Lagerbloom, City of Fort Lauderdale City Manager.

To ride the Sun Trolley, wave at the driver from a safe location anywhere along the route, signaling that you would like to board.
