Simple changes to your daily routine can significantly reduce pollution and help keep our waterways clean.
Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste Properly
Use hazardous household chemicals sparingly and always follow label instructions. Clean up spills immediately and dispose of these products properly. Learn more and see upcoming household hazardous waste drop-off events at www.fortlauderdale.gov/hhw.
Choose Eco-Friendly Products
Choose non-toxic, biodegradable, recycled, and recyclable products whenever you can as these products are gentler on the environment and help reduce chemical runoff and plastic waste.
Use Napkins or Empty Containers to Dispose of Fats, Oils & Grease
Never pour grease, oils, or fats down the drain. These items create clogs that damage pipes and can lead to sewer overflows. Instead, wipe up grease with napkins and dispose of them in the trash, or pour cooled oils and fats into used jars or containers, then seal and throw them away.
Dispose of Medications & Medical Waste Safely
Store and dispose of all medications and medical waste properly. Never flush medications. Mix into coffee grounds or kitty litter and toss in the garbage. When in doubt, consult with your pharmacist. Medications are also accepted at select household hazardous waste drop-off events. See the schedule of upcoming events at www.fortlauderdale.gov/hhw.
