City of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Awarded $1.36 Million FEMA Grant

Post Date:October 28, 2025 1:35 PM

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR) is rising to the challenge when it comes to a new training program. On Thursday, the City Commission formally accepted a $1,360,720 grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. This grant will fund a training program to help with high rise emergencies.

This new initiative comes as Fort Lauderdale’s skyline continues to grow, bringing unique operational challenges for emergency responders. The program will provide 32 instructional hours for every firefighter, focused on strengthening command decision-making, improving coordination during complex high-rise incidents, deploying hose lines, searching for potential victims, and enhancing safety for both firefighters and residents.

“This investment ensures our firefighters are even more prepared for every challenge,” said City Manager Rickelle Williams. “The training represents our ongoing commitment to public safety and to providing our first responders with the knowledge, tools and experience they need to protect our community in any environment.”

The training will be delivered over a two-year period beginning in mid-2026. It will incorporate hands-on, scenario-based instruction utilizing specialized equipment, high-rise simulation props and facility rentals for realistic exercises. The grant will cover overtime costs for firefighters, instructional contracts and training materials.

“As the city continues to grow, it’s important that its fire department grows along with it,” said Fire Chief Stephen Gollan. “We’re grateful that the federal government is helping us grow with this grant.”

The funding includes $1,237,018 in federal support with a required local match of $123,701.
