Construction Update: Friday, February 6, 2026
The City of Fort Lauderdale is making significant stormwater upgrades in Victoria Park to reduce flooding and improve drainage reliability. To complete this work, some trees located in the public right-of-way will need to be removed to allow for installation of new infrastructure.
What’s happening and why:
- As we install new stormwater infrastructure to reduce flooding, crews are identifying trees in the public right-of-way that may conflict with pipes, drainage, and underground exfiltration trenches.
- Exfiltration trenches allow stormwater to soak into the ground gradually, reducing standing water and protecting roads and homes. To keep these systems working for decades, trees should not be planted within 10 feet of the trenches; roots can damage the infrastructure.
- The upgrades include 43,000 feet of stormwater pipe, 360 drainage structures, and a new pump station. All are critical pieces to move water away faster, prevent street and property flooding, and improve reliability during heavy rains.
- Construction began January 5, 2026, and is expected to finish early 2028. During work, you’ll see temporary lane closures with access maintained to homes; we’ll keep you informed of detours and timing.
What the City will do to restore your neighborhood’s tree canopy:
After work is complete, landscaping and swales will be reconstructed; we’ll share the where/when for replanting and the species we recommend near stormwater features to ensure both canopy and infrastructure thrive.
Our goal is to reduce flooding that puts families and homes at risk while rebuilding the canopy thoughtfully.
