The Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) is launching Operation Fast and Furious, a comprehensive traffic safety initiative aimed at reducing aggressive driving behaviors and improving roadway safety throughout the city.
On Tuesday, the City Commission approved $51,000 in grant funding from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to support the program.
Aggressive driving includes speeding, unsafe lane changes, failure to yield, following too closely and ignoring railroad crossings. These behaviors are a leading cause of serious crashes and fatalities.
“Operation Fast and Furious is about saving lives,” said Mayor Dean Trantalis. “By increasing enforcement in high-risk areas, we are sending a clear message that aggressive driving will not be tolerated on our roads.”
As part of the initiative, FLPD will conduct high-visibility enforcement operations in targeted traffic hot spots during both daytime and nighttime hours. Nighttime enforcement is a key focus, as data shows speeding violations increase after dark.
Grant funding will be used to purchase handheld speed radar devices. These devices will enhance officers’ ability to detect and document speeding violations during enforcement operations. The initiative also includes the deployment of a mobile speed radar trailer in areas with high rates of speeding and aggressive driving.
The initiative also includes a strong public education component. FLPD will distribute traffic safety materials in English, Spanish and Creole at community events and share safety messaging across city and police social media platforms.
“This program strengthens enforcement while also educating the public, helping protect residents, visitors and everyone who uses our roadways,” said City Manager Rickelle Williams.
“This initiative ensures Fort Lauderdale is taking decisive action to hold dangerous drivers accountable,” said Fort Lauderdale Police Chief William Schultz. “Slowing drivers down and changing behavior makes our streets safer for everyone.”
