Rush Hour Relief

Post Date:February 19, 2026

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL— In a major move to reduce the impact to rush hour traffic, the City of Fort Lauderdale has announced that weekday operating schedule changes for the SE 17 Street Bridge will become permanent following approval by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

The schedule adjustments were first implemented on a temporary basis in June 2025. This will reduce bridge openings during peak weekday travel times to help improve traffic flow along the SE 17 Street corridor while continuing to accommodate marine traffic.

“I want to thank the United States Coast Guard for working with the City on this update,” said Mayor Dean Trantalis. “The permanent schedule helps ease congestion during the peak hours and improves quality of life for residents and motorists, while maintaining waterway access critical to our yachting community.”

During the weekday, the bridge will continue to not open at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m., with the exception of federal holidays. U.S. vessels and tugs with tows may still pass through the bridge at any time upon proper signal.

“These changes make a noticeable difference,” said Commissioner Ben Sorensen. “It means less congestion, improved safety and a smoother commute without sacrificing marine navigation.”

The SE 17 Street Bridge is located along one of Fort Lauderdale’s most heavily traveled corridors. The adjusted schedule helps reduce congestion during weekday morning and evening rush hours while maintaining safe navigation.

The permanent schedule takes effect February 19, 2026.
