The City of Fort Lauderdale is considering submitting grant applications for the Rebuild Florida Critical Facility Hardening Program administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity to obtain funding for the following City Projects;
- Effluent Pumps Standby Generator & Administration Building at George T. Lohmeyer Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant
Project Cost Estimate: $30,000,000
This project will add energy resiliency to the George T. Lohmeyer (GTL) Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Severe storms and tropical cyclones cause the facility to frequently lose electrical power. The GTL WWTP has limited generator power capacity for only one of the five treated effluent pumps and half of the remaining facility.
These pumps convey treated wastewater to the underground injection control system over three thousand feet below ground. When electrical power is lost, the effluent discharges to the Intracoastal Waterway, requiring a notification of pollution to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as well as financial damages to the City.
The City is requesting $15,000,000 in funding from the Rebuild Florida Critical Facility Hardening Program for to assist in funding this project. These grant funds will be used to add additional standby generator(s) and possible expansion to the Administration Building to house City staff to allow this facility to safely maintain power during emergencies.

- Fiveash Water Treatment Plant Facility Hardening Improvements
Project Cost Estimate: $14,944,000
The Fiveash Water Treatment Plant Reliability Upgrades and Disinfection System Improvements project will improve the performance and reliability at the City's largest water treatment plant. The Fiveash Water Treatment Plant (Fiveash) is the main supply of drinking water for the following cities: Fort Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Sea Ranch Lakes, Tamarac, Wilton Manors and portions of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and unincorporated Broward County. Fiveash, in combination with the Peele Dixie Water Treatment Plant also provide drinking water to the City of Dania Beach, the Town of Davie, and Port Everglades. Fiveash provides approximately 80 percent of the drinking water demand of the City’s service area, which numbers approximately 241,000 people.
This project is necessary to:
- Construct a new emergency generator facility to provide backup power supply to reduce the public health risk hazard in the surrounding communities by ensuring continuous water supply. This will enhance the plant’s energy resilience by constructing an emergency generator facility sized for the current and anticipated electrical demands of the plant to replace the existing emergency generators that cannot supply power to the entire plant and have also exceeded their life expectancy.
- Retrofit the Fiveash Water Treatment Plant buildings with storm hardening features such as new roofs with hurricane tie-downs for roof mounted equipment, a storm-resistant frontage across from the main control room and storm-resistant louvers, windows and doors for the buildings that are critical to the operation of the plant.
- Construct a storm drainage system to reduce disruptions due to frequent flooding in the chemical delivery and chemical storage areas of the plant.
The City is requesting $14,944,000 in funding from the Rebuild Florida Critical Facility Hardening Program for to assist in funding this project. These grant funds will be used for the construction of a new emergency generator building and associated diesel exhaust treatment fluid building, replacement of roofs and adding hurricane tie-downs for roof mounted equipment, replacing the glass wall across from the main control room with a storm resistant glass wall, installing storm resistant doors, windows and louvers in critical buildings and installing a storm drainage system to alleviate flooding issues in the chemical unloading and storage areas of the plant.
