The purpose of SAB is to identify and make recommendations to the City Commission concerning affordable strategies associated with conservation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency ("green urbanism"). More details can be found in Ordinance NO. C-10-48.

Public Comments

The public is invited to submit comments on any agenda items to SustainabilityAdvisoryBoard@fortlauderdale.gov

  • Comments must be submitted no later than 48 hours prior to the start of a meeting.
  • Keep in mind that your e-mail address, comments, and other information will become part of the official public record, as required by Florida law. If you do not want your personal information included in the official record, do not proceed.

The Purpose and Duties of the Sustainability Advisory Board:

(1) To act in an advisory capacity to the City Commission with regards to environmental sustainability.

(2) To identify and recommend affordable strategies associated with climate change, sea level rise, resource use, conservation, renewable energy and energy efficiency, taking into account ecological, economic and social equities.

(3) To research environmentally sound practices that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money, energy and resources.

(4) To facilitate City residents' participation in creating an environmental strategic plan that I will promote environmental sustainability within all areas of the community.

(5) To provide recommendations to the City Commission on incentives for City residents, businesses, developers and organizations to practice environmental conservation and sustainable building practices.

(6) To provide recommendations to the city commission on the adoption, prioritization and implementation of initiatives, actions, policies, and public outreach and education programs to support and promote all aspects of sustainability.

(7) To research financial resources to offset costs such as grants and cost savings initiatives.

(8) To develop and recommend to the City Commission outcome measures for sustainability programs and initiatives.

(9) To monitor the progress of approved initiatives and identify and address stumbling blocks to their implementation to ensure that sustainability benefits are achieved and strategic plans to achieve said benefits are implemented in a reasonable timeframe.

 In making the appointments, the City Commission shall adhere to the following criteria to ensure that persons with various qualifications are represented on the Board including persons with community, engineering and environmental interests:

(1) One member shall be an environmental attorney and a member of the Environmental and Land Use Law Section of the Florida Bar.

(2) One member shall be a Florida state-certified educator specializing in the environment.

(3) One member shall be an environmental scientist, Florida state-licensed engineer or architect.

(4) One member shall be in a business or profession related to the marine industry.

(5) One member shall have certification or credential equivalent to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in business practices such as construction and/or product development.

(6) One member shall be a consensus appointee by the city commission.

(7) Notwithstanding the above, if the city commission determines that an applicant for a vacancy on the Board possesses the experience required for filling a particular vacancy, such person may be appointed.
