Fort Lauderdale is growing a greener future by expanding and improving the trees in our city—our urban forest. We're aiming for 33% tree canopy coverage by 2040, which means more trees for shade, cleaner air, and a more beautiful city!
Public input has been essential in shaping our Urban Forestry Master Plan, which provides a clear path forward. The Plan assesses the current state of the urban forest and outlines recommendations within a sustainable framework for future management, maintenance and regulation.
The following is a timeline of upcoming activities:
An Urban Forestry Master Plan (UFMP) has been developed that integrates best practices in urban forestry with insights gathered from public meetings, survey responses and a public comment period.
During their meeting on Monday, October 27, the Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) discussed the Urban Forestry Master Plan. The SAB has submitted a communication to the City Commission encouraging the City Commission to adopt the proposed Urban Forestry Master Plan by resolution at an upcoming Commission meeting. This communication will be presented during the City Commission Conference Meeting on Tuesday, November 18.
RES, the City's consultant, presented the draft Urban Forestry Master Plan to the Sustainability Advisory Board on Tuesday, September 30.
Public meetings were held in March & April 2025 throughout the City, with in-person and virtual options, to collect community feedback. The meetings were identical in format and started with a brief presentation featuring an overview of the Urban Forestry Master Plan, followed by an opportunity for public comment and discussion.
The City encouraged neighbors and businesses to contribute to the Urban Forestry Master Plan by responding to a survey in spring 2025. Responses are being considered during the development of the Plan’s goals and recommendations.
