Help Make SE 15th Street Safer

A sidewalk/pedestrian feasibility study is underway!

The City of Fort Lauderdale is working to improve pedestrian safety along SE 15 Street, from Cordova Road to the Marina. As part of this effort, we are studying whether a sidewalk or pedestrian path can fit within the space that is already available.

The goal is to create a continuous, safe path for people walking along SE 15 Street while preserving as much on-street parking as possible.

Current Status

The City’s engineering consultant is finalizing the preferred alternative for how a pedestrian path could be added. It aims to connect missing sidewalk segments while minimizing impacts to parking and landscaping where possible.

We encourage residents and property owners along SE 15 Street to review the concept and provide any feedback to City staff by either calling (954) 828 - 4826 or by emailing transportation@fortlauderdale.gov.

Previous Action

The following milestones have been completed as of September 2025:

City staff presented the proposed sidewalk/pedestrian pathway concepts to the Harbordale Civic Association on September 10, 2025, at an in-person meeting.
A public meeting was held virtually and in-person on September 30, 2025, to engage in public feedback regarding the concepts. Notice of the public hearing was sent through postcard mailers, public yard sign postings, and share on the city's project page.
An in-person walking meeting was held with residents on November 12, 2025, to walk the street and explain what the possible pathway options would look like and their placement.

Concept Plans

Paved Shoulder Pathway

This option adds either a three-foot or four-foot-wide shoulder where the space allows along the south side of SE 15 Street to create a continuous walking path. The goal is to connect missing sidewalk segments using pavement striping on both sides to clearly define where pedestrians can walk.

To make room for the pathway:

Some assigned parking areas may need to be adjusted
A portion of the existing landscaping or green space would be reduced
In narrow areas, the path would be reduced to a minimum of three feet, while still allowing space for two vehicles to park in tandem
A buffer will be added where space allows
Some areas of pavement would need to be reworked to meet ADA standards, especially near travel lanes and parking spaces

This alternative is designed to improve walkability while maintaining on-street parking where possible.

What You Can Do Now - Avoid parking in the travel lane

Please make sure your vehicle is parked completely off the street. Parking that extends into the roadway creates safety risks for pedestrians and drivers and may be subject to citations and fines.
