CITY COMMISSION CONFERENCE MEETING
BUS-1 Commission Discusses Options for Larger Athletic Field at Sunrise Middle School
The Commission received an update on the athletic field currently under construction at Sunrise Middle School following input from community members that the original design was too small for soccer games. City staff presented options for a larger field and recommended a 100-by-50-yard natural grass field that could accommodate youth soccer games at all levels. The recommended option has an estimated cost of $960,000 to $985,000. The proposed changes would extend the project's anticipated completion to summer 2027. The Commission encouraged City staff to continue working with Sunrise Middle School, the School Board of Broward County, School Board Members, and community stakeholders to determine the best path forward. M-2 Commission Approves $82.6 Million for Riverland Stormwater Improvements
The Commission approved an agreement for approximately $82.6 million with David Mancini & Sons, Inc. for major stormwater improvements in the Riverland neighborhood. The area experiences flooding during moderate to heavy rainfall due to the lack of a comprehensive drainage system. The project will include new drainage pipes, stormwater pump stations and other infrastructure designed to reduce flooding and improve drainage throughout the neighborhood. The agreements cover the design and construction of the improvements, with substantial completion expected approximately two years after the second notice to proceed. The project is part of the City's ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure and protect neighborhoods from flooding. For more details, visit ftlcity.info/4elDCgs.
M-3 Commission Approves $94.8 Million for Melrose Manors Stormwater Improvements
The Commission approved approximately $94.8 million for a major stormwater improvement project aimed at addressing longstanding flooding concerns in the Melrose Manors neighborhood. The City will partner with Man-Con, Incorporated to develop a comprehensive drainage system that will better manage stormwater during heavy rainfall. Improvements will include the installation of underground drainage infrastructure and new pump stations, along with restoration of roadways and other areas affected by construction. PH-5 Commission Advances Changes to Himmarshee Entertainment District
The Commission approved the first reading of an ordinance to remove the Special Entertainment Overlay District designation from the Himmarshee entertainment area along SW 2nd Street. Established in 1999, the district allowed participating businesses to operate under special entertainment regulations. However, changes in property ownership and business operations have left the district out of compliance with City requirements. The proposed ordinance would require businesses to comply with typical City requirements regarding hours of operation and noise limitations. If adopted on second reading, the ordinance would take effect 180 days later allowing time for each business to come into compliance with distance separation requirements for establishments that serve alcohol.
