Historic Annie Beck House Renovation

The City of Fort Lauderdale and Encop, Inc. are enhancing the historic Annie Beck House in Middle River Terrace. The work includes:

• Exterior & Structural: Repairing the porch and deck, restoring the façade, repainting/resealing the original windows, and installing new rain gutters to redirect stormwater to a new retention area.
• Interior: Repainting the interior and sanding/refinishing the interior flooring.
• Drainage & Moisture Control: Regrading the crawl space and installing a vapor barrier to improve drainage and reduce moisture beneath the wood flooring.

• Timeline: June 2026 – November 2026
• Hours: Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Note: Schedule is subject to change due to weather or unforeseen conditions.

What to Expect & Neighborhood Impacts

• Noise: Expect minor, intermittent noise from construction activities.
• Traffic: No traffic impacts are expected as part of this project.
• Middle River Terrace Park: Park access will not be impacted by construction.
• Safety: Avoid the active construction area. Please follow posted signs and use caution at all times.

About the Historic Annie Beck House

The home is a Craftsman-style bungalow built in 1916 for early Fort Lauderdale pioneers Dr. Alfred J. Beck and his wife, Annie. Dr. Beck, a pharmacist, came to Fort Lauderdale in 1915 and opened the first drug store in town. In 1916, Dr. Beck married Annie Margaret Atkinson, and together they built this house which they called, "The Atom." The home is made from Dade County Pine and remained Annie's home until she passed away in 1985.

Annie was extremely active in the community with ties to All Saints Episcopal Church where she is considered to be a founding member. She also was a member and president of the Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club, the founder of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, the 1919 Women's Study Group, and founder of Fort Lauderdale's first garden club later known as the Federated Garden Club of Fort Lauderdale and its Circles. Annie is best known for her leadership in the project to revitalize and landscape the City after the devastating hurricane of 1926.

Annie's home presently sits in its third location and is lovingly cared for by the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation and the City of Fort Lauderdale. The Trust acknowledges Mrs. Diana Heileman for her donation of the house and her desire to preserve this historically significant resource for all to enjoy in Middle River Terrace Park.
