King Tide Update: Roadway Flooding Expected Tuesday-Thursday
Several Fort Lauderdale roadways experienced flooding this morning as higher-than-normal tides pushed water into low-lying areas of the City. Tidal flooding is expected to be more widespread tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 27, when the highest tide of the year is predicted at approximately 9:45 a.m. Another high tide is predicted at approximately 8:50 p.m. tonight.
Neighbors should anticipate standing water on roads in areas prone to tidal flooding, with some streets potentially becoming impassable around peak tide
High Tide:
Tue. 10/27 – 9:45 AM & 9:45 PM
Wed. 10/28 – 10:30 AM & 10:30 PM
Thu. 10/29 – 11:15 AM & 11:30 PM
We want neighbors to understand what is happening, what to expect and how the City is responding.
Why can't the City simply pump the water out?
Unlike flooding caused by heavy rainfall, tidal flooding occurs when rising ocean levels push saltwater into low-lying areas through waterways and drainage systems and over seawalls.
Stormwater pumps are designed to move rainwater out of neighborhoods. However, when ocean levels are exceptionally high, there may be nowhere for that water to go. Pumping into waterways that are already elevated by the tide may not be effective, and water can continue to enter streets until the tide begins to recede.
That doesn't mean the City isn't taking action. Our teams are monitoring conditions, responding to reports of flooding and addressing roadway safety concerns. While we cannot control the height of the tide, we can take steps to help keep our neighbors safe, help them prepare, and reduce the impacts.
What neighbors should expect Tuesday-Thursday:
- Roadway flooding is possible in low-lying neighborhoods, at high tide for the next three days.
- Entering and exiting properties may be especially difficult during these periods. Please plan accordingly and allow extra travel time.
- Some roadways may become impassable or require temporary closures.Floodwaters may remain on streets until tidal levels begin to drop.
- Rainfall and wind conditions could make flooding worse.
- Please secure your waste carts rather than placing them at the curb to prevent them from tipping, filling with water or floating into roadways. If you do set carts out for service, secure them promptly following collection.
Please use caution. Avoid driving through flooded streets. If you must travel near standing water, slow down to avoid creating wakes that can push water onto nearby properties.
Report impassable roads by calling 954-828-8000 or submitting a request through the FixItFTL app.
