Fertilizer Use Prohibited June 1 - September 30

The use of fertilizers containing nitrogen and/or phosphorus is prohibited during the rainy season, from June 1 through September 30. This seasonal restriction helps protect the environment by limiting stormwater runoff, reducing the risk of algal blooms, and improving overall water quality. Excess nutrients are a leading cause of algal blooms, and during periods of heavy rainfall, fertilizers are more likely to wash into local waterways.

Read our fertilizer use ordinance to learn more.

Bag Label Requirements: Fertilizers applied to turf or landscape plants must be used according to the directions and requirements listed on the product label.

Buffer Zones: Do not apply fertilizer within ten feet of any water body, including ponds, streams, lakes, canals, and wetlands.

Equipment Safeguards: Rotary (broadcast) spreaders must be equipped with deflector shields to prevent granules from landing on impervious surfaces, fertilizer-free zones, or water bodies.

Spill Cleanup: Any fertilizer spilled, applied, or deposited on an impervious surface must be immediately and completely removed.

Runoff Prevention: Fertilizer must never be washed, swept, or blown into storm drains, ditches, or water bodies.

Enforcement: Violations of the ordinance are noncriminal infractions, with fines defined in Sec. 11-25 – Civil Penalties.
