CITY COMMISSION CONFERENCE MEETING 

Commission Receives 2026 Storm Season Preparedness Update 
The Commission received an update on the City's preparedness efforts for the 2026 hurricane season. The presentation outlined stormwater operations, flood mitigation projects, emergency communications and resources available to help residents prepare for severe weather. Staff also highlighted the City's monthly sandbag distribution program, which is available on the third weekend of each month through November at locations throughout the city. Commission Discusses Changes to Barrier Island Event Regulations 
The Commission discussed potential changes to outdoor event regulations on the barrier island and provided direction for a future ordinance amendment. The Commission supported requiring neighborhood acknowledgment forms for event applications, establishing a monthly quiet weekend, establishing limits on the number of annual road closure permits and seasonal restrictions to road closures. Commission Receives Vacation Rental Enforcement Update 
The Commission received an update on the City's vacation rental enforcement program and discussed potential changes to strengthen the existing ordinance. The presentation reviewed current enforcement efforts, common violations and challenges encountered when enforcing vacation rental regulations. Staff also shared proposed updates intended to improve accountability and support more effective enforcement of registered vacation rentals throughout Fort Lauderdale. CITY COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING

Commission Approves Harm Reduction Overdose Program Grant 
The Commission approved the acceptance of $344,988 in grant funding from the Florida Department of Health to support Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue's Harm Reduction Overdose Program. The funding will enhance the department's response to the opioid crisis through public education, community outreach, expanded data collection and overdose prevention efforts that connect individuals with treatment and recovery resources. Commission Approves Local Legends’ Legacies Public Art Project 
The Commission approved the implementation of the Local Legends’ Legacies public art project at Lincoln Park and the inaugural group of honorees. The project will recognize community members whose contributions helped shape the Historic Sistrunk community through the installation of bronze paver plaques and a Rainbow Eucalyptus tree. The first honorees include Walter “Mickey” Hinton, Louis D. Benton Sr., Dr. William Alexander Morris, and Ellyn Ferguson Walters. For more details, visit ftlcity.info/4e1bfn2

Commission Extends Grant Agreement for Downtown Stormwater Pump Station Generators 
The Commission approved an amendment to extend a grant agreement supporting the installation of emergency generators for the City's downtown stormwater system. The generators will help keep stormwater pumps operating during power outages, reducing flood risks and improving system reliability during severe weather events. Commission Approves HUD Grant for Lauderdale Manors Park Multimodal Connections Project 
The Commission approved a $720,000 grant agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to fund the Lauderdale Manors Park Multimodal Connections Project. The project will add sidewalks and improve pedestrian access near Mills Pond Park and along Chateau Park Drive, helping residents safely connect to neighborhood parks and other community destinations. Commission Authorizes Grant Application for Riverside Park Mobility Project 
The Commission authorized the submission of a grant application for up to $5 million to fund the Riverside Park Mobility Project. If awarded, the funding would support new sidewalks, crosswalks, ADA improvements and traffic calming measures designed to improve pedestrian safety and create safer routes throughout the neighborhood, including connections to Riverside Park and Stranahan High School. Commission Defers City Hall Project Discussion to July 2 
The Commission deferred consideration of the Interim Agreement with FTL City Hall Partners, LLC for the City Hall Project to July 2, 2026. This deferral allows for additional time to conduct building assessments and appraisals. It also provides time to address concerns related to the Interim Agreement raised by the City Commission on April 21, 2026, including the project’s overall cost, developer fee structure, financing and developer equity, available City funding and building design features. Staff is also refining potential funding strategies and budget options that will be presented to the Commission as part of the City's continued evaluation of future City Hall alternatives. Commission Approves Conceptual Site Plan for Fort Lauderdale Beach Park Improvements 
The Commission approved a conceptual site plan for improvements at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park. Subject to final engineering and applicable permitting, regulatory, and environmental approvals, the project includes the refurbishment of the existing basketball courts, the addition of four (4) pickleball courts, a new outdoor fitness area, flexible lawn spaces, landscaping, and other park amenities intended to expand recreational opportunities along the beachfront. Commission Advances Charter Amendment Related to City-Owned Property 
The Commission approved a proposed Charter amendment for voter consideration on the November 2026 ballot. The amendment would revise procedures governing the sale and lease of city-owned property, including supermajority voting requirements for certain transactions. The Commission also directed that the ballot language include a referendum process to overturn certain Commission actions concerning the sale or lease of city-owned property. Commission Advances Charter Amendments to Establish Police Chief and Fire Chief as Charter Officers 
The Commission approved proposed Charter amendments for voter consideration on the November 2026 ballot. If approved by voters, the amendments would establish the Police Chief and Fire Chief as Charter Officers who report directly to the City Commission rather than the City Manager. The amendments also require future Police Chiefs and Fire Chiefs hired from outside the organization to reside in Fort Lauderdale during their employment, while the current chiefs and future internal promotions would be exempt from the requirement. Upcoming City Commission Meetings
