About
Pursuit of environmental sustainability is paramount to ensuring our world remains the rare gem we enjoy today. The City's Sustainability and Special Projects Program delivers practical projects that protect our community, safeguard taxpayer investments, and support long-term resilience. This work encompasses securing grant funding and advancing initiatives designed to conserve water and energy, reduce costs, eliminate single-use consumption, and strengthen essential services.

LEED for Cities
In an effort to benchmark its progress on sustainability and resiliency, in 2023, the City prepared an application for certification under the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Cities program. As a result, the City of Fort Lauderdale received a LEED Gold Certification by earning 61 points out of the 110 points available across nine credit categories. Key strategies contributing to the certification included the City’s commitment to parks, open spaces and regional resilience planning efforts, as well as its investments in multimodal transit such as express and commuter rail, county-wide bus networks, carpool, and water taxi. Through collaboration across City departments and with regional partners, Fort Lauderdale continues to advance solutions that protect the environment, strengthen communities, and enhance quality of life for residents and visitors.
