Traffic Enforcement and Education

The City of Fort Lauderdale uses the following strategies and tools to help increase safety and comfort for all users. Find out more information about each strategy or tool in this page.

Cost

The general price ranges provided are simply an estimated cost for a standard project. Actual costs may vary based on the specific project, location, etc.

Education

If traffic safety education classes are requested or recommended to address issues related to driver, pedestrian, or bicycle behavior, they will be offered within (8) eight weeks of the request. However, this is dependent upon coordination with the interested neighborhood or school representatives.


Enforcement

Traffic enforcement is provided by the City of Fort Lauderdale Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit. Enforcement requests will be completed based on current staffing and workload. Traffic-related requests should be emailed to Transportation@fortlauderdale.gov for consideration.

Description: Police officers on site to witness issue and write citations as needed

Radar Speed Sign

Description: Radar speed signs indicate to drivers the speed limit and the speed at which they are traveling. If speeding occurs, the sign will flash at the driver to draw attention

Advantages

  • Battery and solar powered options available
  • Relatively short turnaround time
  • Increased driver awareness of speed

Disadvantages

  • Drivers may not obey without enforcement
  • Effectiveness lessens with time

Radar Speed Trailer

Description: Radar speed trailers are deployed by the Police Department to indicate to drivers the speed limit and the speed at which they are traveling

Advantages

  • Increased driver awareness of speed
  • Trailer can be easily moved to another location if needed

Disadvantages

  • Short-term, temporary solution

Variable Message Sign (VMS)

Description: VMS can be used to slow traffic by displaying a personalized message and encourage safe driving behaviors

Advantages

  • Increased awareness of surroundings
  • Message can be changed if effectiveness lessens
  • Sign can be easily moved to another location if needed

Disadvantages

  • Drivers may not pay attention or obey without enforcement

Cost: $ (labor only)
