Chief Waterways Officer

The Chief Waterways Officer advises on environmental programs related to the City’s waterways including canals, rivers, the intercoastal waterway, inlets, and the beach, with a focus on water quality, navigability, and safety. The Chief Waterways Officer serves as a liaison to the marine industry and waterway residential communities on all issues related to navigability, waterway activities, vessel operations, and marine regulations while also working with non-profits, Florida Inland Navigation District, and other external government and private organizations to identify opportunities for habitat restoration and to enhance our waterways.

The Adopt-a-Shoreline Program is more than a cleanup initiative — it’s a community effort to protect wildlife, build connections and keep our waterways vibrant for generations to come. Living Seawall Permit Fee Assistance Program

Living seawalls are shoreline protection structures that mimic natural habitats and offer a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to coastal management by providing benefits that extend beyond a tidal barrier. The City of Fort Lauderdale has established a program to assist property owners with the base cost of City permit fees related to the installation of a qualifying living seawall.

Canal and Waterway Concerns

Please report any canal/waterway concerns or issues using FixIt FTL. Marine vessels shall adhere to Chapter 8 Article V of the City of Fort Lauderdale's Code of Ordinances. The City of Fort Lauderdale has introduced new protective and preventive measures to curb derelict boats and sewage leaks as featured on Local 10 News
