Homeless Initiatives

Welcome to the City of Fort Lauderdale's Homeless Initiatives webpage.
The City of Fort Lauderdale is committed to addressing homelessness through a coordinated, compassionate, and solutions-focused approach. This webpage highlights the City's programs, partnerships, and ongoing initiatives aimed at preventing homelessness, connecting individuals with housing and supportive services, and improving the quality of life for both those experiencing homelessness and the community as a whole. Homelessness is a complex issue with no single solution. The City works collaboratively with service providers, Broward County, law enforcement, healthcare organizations, and community partners to expand access to housing, behavioral health services, employment resources, and other critical supports. Through outreach, case management, and strategic investments, our goal is to help individuals achieve long-term stability while maintaining safe and welcoming public spaces for everyone. The City of Fort Lauderdale Police Department's Homeless Outreach Team plays a critical role in this effort by engaging individuals experiencing homelessness, building relationships, and connecting them with available shelter, housing, treatment, and supportive services. Whenever possible, the City's response prioritizes engagement and assistance over enforcement.
Florida House Bill 1365
Effective October 1, 2024, Florida House Bill 1365 prohibits camping or sleeping on public property. The law defines camping as lodging, residing, or remaining temporarily in an outdoor space using a tent, hut, lean-to, shack, or other temporary shelter that provides protection from the elements for sleeping purposes. Residents who observe camping or sleeping on public property may report concerns through the FixIt FTL app or by visiting the FixIt FTL page. Reports are reviewed and routed to the appropriate City staff for response in accordance with state law and the City's outreach and enforcement procedures.
